kid’s chapter books: friendship

When I write kid’s chapter books, I love to stress the importance of friendship, and good character. Part of showing good character is keeping your promises. Ben Moser and Mary Lapkowicz were in second, third and fourth grades together. You might be thinking that’s not unusual, but wait till you hear the rest of the story!  Mary has Down’s Syndrome. Ben has always protected her. When they were in second grade together, Ben always watched over her. He noticed when she wasn’t having fun. What did he do? He drew her into the activities. During a second grade soccer game Ben told the players, “Mary needs to score.” He set up a situation where she could do exactly that.

Ben admits he “Thought Mary was really cool.” He continued, “She’s sweet and easy to get along with.”

Mary had the same type of feelings for Ben. She said, “He was sweet and really nice.”

At the end of the year when Ben and Mary were in fourth grade, Ben asked his Mom if kids like Mary went to Prom. Ben’s Mom said, “Sure honey, if someone asks them.” Immediately, Ben said, “Someday I’m gonna take Mary to prom.” Getting ready for the prom, Ben said, “There shouldn’t be a barrier of whether you have Down’s Syndrome or not. It doesn’t matter. You should just do the right thing.” Great thoughts, Ben!

Something happened in sixth grade that could have changed everything. Mary went to a different school where her Dad was a teacher. When Mary began high school, she became equipment manager when her Dad worked with the members of the football team. Ben had also changed schools in high school and eventually he played  football against Mary’s school.  Ben was the quarter back for his team. Do you think he forgot the promise he made to Mary? No, he didn’t Isn’t that amazing? With balloons in hand, Ben asked Mary to prom and she happily accepted.

If you’re looking for kid’s chapter books about friendship, you may like Charlie the Horse, Charlene the Star and Hattie’s Heroes, or Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog. All of these kid’s chapter books put friendship, teamwork, and good manners in the spotlight. If you choose to read them. I hope they become among your favorite kid’s chapter books.
