kid’s chapter books: sharing

As you may know, I love writing kid’s chapter books that highlight sharing and other important values. My goal is to help children remember those lessons and pass them on to others. The story I’m going to share with you today is truly amazing and one I think you’ll remember for a long time to come.

Most every high school girl dreams of becoming homecoming queen. Some unkind girls in her school, Grand Prairie High School in Texas, spread a rumor that Lillian Skinner was nominated for Homecoming Queen, but they were playing a cruel trick on Lillian. She hadn’t been nominated at all. Two of Lillian’s closest friends, Naomi Martinez and Anahi Alvarez, planned a happy ending to the prank. They say that Lillian is “One of the sweetest people.”

“Thankfully two young ladies who were actually nominated have hearts of gold. When Anahi Alvarez and Naomi Martinez, who are longtime friends of Skinner’s, heard about the prank, they vowed to give their pal the crown regardless of who won.

“We promised each other and we were like, ‘No matter what, no backing down. If one of us wins, we’re giving Lillian the crown,’ ” Naomi Martinez told NBC 5 in Dallas. When Anahi Alvarez was chosen Homecoming Queen, she called Lillian to the stage. Lillian remembered saying, “My name’s not on the list.” But Anahi assured her, “It’s okay, it’s okay. It’s your crown.”

Seeing the look on her face,” Naomi said, “We knew we made the right decision.”

Here are Anahi’ s thoughts on winning:

“For me, I want to say, and I always say, ‘Lilly won. I just ran in her place, in her position,’ ” Alvarez added. “When they ask me, ‘Were you homecoming queen?’ I say, ‘No, Lilly is homecoming queen.’ ”

Don’t you think Lillian could write amazing kid’s chapter books on this heartwarming experience? She’s an extraordinary young lady, who wants us all to remember, “It’s what’s inside your heart that counts. That’s how you know somebody.”

This is a lovely story of kindness and unselfishness toward a sweet young girl who was hurt by others’ callousness. It was a good ending and says a lot for those two girls whose thoughtfulness made a difference to this sweet girl.

  2. Sherry Ellis says:

It’s nice to see young people being kind and unselfish.
