Non fiction books for kids: Attitude matters

Imagine that you want to write non fiction books for kids. You want those non fiction books for kids to be remarkable. One thing you need is a positive attitude. You must have faith in your talents and believe that all things are possible. Has your mom ever told you that it’s okay if you have a slow start with things, as long as you put all the effort you can into what you do? That’s something to which I can relate. If you haven’t heard of Apollos Hester, I’d like to introduce him to you because I think you’ll be hearing a lot about this young man. His football team never gave up during a game. They believed that they would win. Here’s part of Apollos’ inspiring speech:

“All right, well, at first we started slow, we started real slow, and you know, that’s all right, that’s OK, because sometimes in life, you’re gonna start slow. That’s OK. We told ourselves, ‘Hey, we’re gonna start slow, we’re gonna keep going fast. We’re gonna start slow, but we’re always, always gonna finish fast. No matter what the score was, we’re gonna finish hard, we’re gonna finish fast.

Yeah, they had us the first half, I’m not gonna lie, they had us. We weren’t defeated, but they had us. But it took guts, it took an attitude—that’s all it takes. That’s all it takes to be successful is an attitude. And that’s what our coach told us. He said, ‘Hey, it’s gonna be tough. It’s gonna be tough. It’s gonna be hard. You’re gonna go out there, you’re gonna battle, you’re gonna fight, you’re gonna do it for one another. Do it for each other, you’re gonna do it for yourself, you’re gonna do it for us, and you’re gonna go out with this win.’ And we believed that, we truly did. And it’s an awesome feeling.”

Apollos’ speech is being hailed as one of the most uplifting ever. I applaud him for realizing that your attitude can carry you a long way in life, maybe even to victory. I wonder if he’ll decide to write amazing non-fiction books for kids. Imagine the impact he could make. In an interview this morning he said his Mom always told him “Never give up. Make people feel special because if you do that, you’ll be really special yourself.”

I had a slow start in life. I didn’t walk at the usual age. There were difficult times when it seemed like my goal of becoming a champion horseback rider was far beyond my reach. But my parents said anything was possible if I persevered. Giving up on my dream was not an option. I wrote about the journey in my award-winning autobiography Tails of Sweetbrier.  I hope it becomes one of your favorite non fiction books for kids and inspires you to accomplish great things. Whether you like to write entertaining non fiction books for kids or something else, remember attitude matters.

  1. I think we have to give ourselves permission to fail. We have to say, “This isn’t going to be easy, but I’m going to keep going no matter what.” It’s hard to hold onto that belief in yourself when rejection is all around, but that’s the key to success in anything.

    • Yes, that’s very true Stephanie. We learn through our failures. I think they make us stronger, wiser people. Most of all, I believe that perseverance is the key to success. We should always pursue our dreams.
